Charles Arthur Brown was born in 1890 he was the son of Harry a domestic coachman and Mary Brown née Clayton of 30 Heskey Street, Nottingham. Harry was born in 1854 at Bingham, Mary Clayton was born in 1852 at North Wheatley, married in 1874 at Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children. He was the brother of Emma Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, Jessie, Edith May, Harry Richard, Beth, Dora, Eva Nellie and Robert Brown. In 1901 the family lived at 16 Dame Agnes Street and in 1911 at 30 Heskey Street, Huntingdon Street (both St Ann's Nottingham).
In 1911 he was a bill poster inspector.

Sergeant Charles Arthur Brown enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 25959 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 5th September 1918 and is buried at Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
