Father: Joseph Ernest Carnall, born 1872 at Humberstone, Leicester and working as a silk cutter.Mother: Eliza Carnall, born 1873 at Nottingham. He had two brothers; John Lancelot, born 1897 and Claude, born 1904. He also had two sisters; Edith Marian, born 1902 and Minnie, born 1910. All the children were born at Nottingham. The family lived at 21 Dowson Street, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham, before moving to 209 Gordon Road, Nottingham.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Carnall volunteered for service and attested at Nottingham on 23/03.1915. According to his medical records his physical development was good. He trained with 3/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, but on being drafted to France on 27/10/1915 he was posted to 1/7th Battalion. The battalion was based at Foncquevillers for some time preparing the trench system for the attack on Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Carnall was killed in action on 30/05/1916. He was buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 12 June 1916: 'Carnall. Killed in action May 30th, Private Ernest Carnall, Sherwood Foresters, of 209 Gordon Road, aged 18 years.' In memoriam published 30th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CARNALL. – In loving memory of Private Ernest Carnall, killed in action May 30th, 1916.
