On the Mattersey memorial the name Taylor, Thomas C appears. His birth registration in 1898, names him as Tom Bradbury Cliff-Taylor. His father, Albert Cliff Taylor (a general labourer) had married Alice Bradbury in 1897. Apart from Thomas they had five other children, Arthur Cliff Taylor born 1897, George Albert Cliff Taylor 1900, Frances Cliff Taylor 1902, Alice Cliff Taylor 1903 and Annie Cliff Taylor born 1907. They family had moved to live in Mattersey village prior to 1900 where their last four children were born.

Judging by his location and date of death, Thomas would have been involved in the, Battle of the Somme known as the “Big Push” which started on the 1st July and ended on the 18th November 1916 resulting in catastrophic loss of lives on both sides. He was killed in action and as he has no known grave, is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France
