Arthur William Dames was born in 1891the son of John a general labourer and Elizabeth Dames (née Jones). His parents were born at Nottingham and married in 1877. They had nine children - Annie b.1877, Clara b.1879, Ernest b.1880, Gertrude b.1883, Robert b.1884, Catherine b.1888, Arthur William b.1891, Edward b.1892 and Thomas b.1896. In 1911, they lived at 27 Ossington Street, Independent Street, Radford Nottingham. Robert worked as a painter, his wife Clara was a cotton winder, William and Thomas were lace trade doublers and Edward was a bricklayer’s labourer. Arthur William married Ethel Maud Serle in 1914 in Nottingham and they had two sons William and Thomas. They lived at 50 Independent Street Radford Nottingham.

38th Bde Arthur William Dames enlisted at Nottingham and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery Grave Reference IX.B.86.
His brother Private Robert Dames enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action on 10th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
