Walter Dawson was born in 1893 at Kneeton and was the son of Joseph a farm shepherd and Lavinia Dawson née Edis of Main Street Radcliffe on Trent Nottinghamshire. His father Joseph was born in 1856 at Essendine Rutland and his mother Lavinia Edis was born in 1856 at Baston, Lincolnshire, they were married on 29th March 1883 at Baston, they had a further child Henry b1884 at Clipsham, Rutland. In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent and are shown as Joseph 55 yrs a farm shepherd, he is living with his wife Lavinia 55 yrs and their son Walter 18 yrs a butchers apprentice,
He was a butcher's apprentice in 1911 working at Radcliffe on Trent.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Walter Dawson enlisted at Newark sometime after 1 January 1916 and served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters On 16th September the battalion was in support of the 6th Lincolnshire Regiment who attacked and took Constance trench. During this action 'D' company moved up in close support of 6th Lincoln's and two other ranks died, one being Walter. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
Also remembered on the canal side memorial at Kinoulton. The family of Monty Hind (officer killed on Somme) planted an avenue of trees at Kinoulton to the men of 9th Battalion. These trees were replaced and an information board erected a few years ago.
