Ernest Victor Wheatley was born in 1897 the son of Arthur an iron foundry labourer and the late Dorothy Wheatley, née Emmett of Old Westwood, Jacksdale. Arthur Wheatley was born in 1870 at Northampton, Dorothy Wheatley was born in 1866 at Golden Valley, Derby she died in 1910 aged 40 yrs, married in 1890 at Leicester they had 7 children 3 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Margaret Ada b1893 Westwood, Arthur Edwin b1899, Elizabeth May b1904 all were born in Leicester. In 1911 they lived at Old Westwood Jacksdale Nottinghamshire.
He was a miner (ganger).

Sergeant Ernest Victor Wheatley enlisted on 2nd September 1914 at Nottingham, giving a false age of 19 yrs and 11 months, (he was born in 1897 and only 17 yrs ) he was a coal miner. Embarking from Folkstone and landing in France on 29th July 1915 he was promoted to Corporal on 7th May 1916 and Sergeant on 9th January 1917. He was killed in action on 13th April 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
