He was the son of John William Codd, a green grocer from Normanby Yorkshire and Emma Codd who was born at Conningsby, Lincolnshire. He was the brother of Elizabeth (b.1890) and Charles (b.1896) Codd. By 1911 he was lodging at ‘Hughes Villas’, Welbeck Street, Kirkby in Ashfield (East Kirkby) Nottinghamshire before moving to 23 Midland Crescent, Meadows, Nottingham. He was the husband of Mabel Helen Codd. At some point he had emigrated to Canada and enlisted there 3/8/1915.
In 1911 he was a railway engine fireman for the Midland Railway.

Eastern Ontario Regiment Codd was killed during the Canadian advance through the Easter snow to take Vimy Ridge on 09/04/1917.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 9/4/1919: 'Codd. In loving remembrance of my dear husband. Pte. E T (sic) Codd (Ted), Canadian Expeditionary Forces who was killed in action April 9th 1917. Sweet is the memory of one so dear.'
