John Thomas Hickman was born on 10th February 1891 at Brough and was the son of Tom Dolphin Hickman an agricultural labourer and Martha Ann Hickman, née Vickers of of Hillarney, Manitoba, Canada. His father Tom Dolphin was born in 1862 at Brough and his mother Martha Ann Vickers was born in 1863 at Timberland, Lincolnshire. They were married on 27th March 1884 at South Collingham and went on to have the following children, William b1885, Fanny Elizabeth b1887 John Thomas b1889,Kathleen Rebecca b1892 and Samuel b1901 all were born at Brough. In the 1901 census the family are living at Brick Yard Houses, Collingham, John Thomas Hickman emigrated on 27th April 1907 aged 16 yrs he left England on board the S.S. Siberian and travelled to St John's Canada where he became a farmer. Later the same year his parents and sister Katherine and brother Samuel also followed him to Canada.

Private John Thomas Hickman enlisted on 25th September 1916 whilst residing at Boissevain, Manitoba, Canada, he gave his age as 25 yrs and his date of birth as 10th February 1891 he was posted to the 44th Canadian Battalion He was killed in action on 10th August 1918 while taking part in an attack on enemy positions at Fouquescourt he was hit in the neck and side by machine gun bullets and killed instantly.(origin Canada, War Graves Registers ) He is buried at Rosieres Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
It has been noted that the Birth death and marriage index records give John Thomas Hickman's year of birth as 1889 registered at Newark, and his age on the 1901 census is given as 12 yrs (born 1889) when he emigrates in 1907 he is 16 yrs (b1891) and on enlistment in Canada in 1916 he gives his age as 25 yrs and his date of birth as 10th February 1891, taking two years off his age.
