Harold Arthur Edgar Newton was born on the 4th April 1891 at Lowdham and was the son of Arthur Edward a coal merchant and Sophie Eliza Newton née Simpson of Lowdham, Nottingham. His father Arthur Edward was born in 1862 at Oldham and his mother Sophie Eliza Simpson was born in 1859 at Camden Town, London. They were married on 4th June 1890 at Fulham and had the following children, Harold Arthur Edgar b1891, Cyril Wilfred Simpson b1894 and Leslie William b1899, all were born at Lowdham. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Tunn Lane, Lowdham village and are shown as Arthur Edward Newton 49 yrs a coal merchant, who is living with his wife Sophie Eliza 52 yrs. Also living with them is Millicent Maude 81 yrs widow, his mother, and Alice Gertrude Simpson 47 yrs his sister-in-law. Harold emigrated to Canada and in the 1911 census he is living in the Yukon Territory; he is 21 yrs of age. Harold made a Will and probate was proven on 5th September 1916 at Nottingham and shows him as Harold Arthur Edgar Newton of Lowdham, Private in H.M. Army died 6th April 1916 at Belgium, effects of £53, 17 shillings and 6 pence. Administration was awarded to Sophie Eliza Newton wife of Arthur Edward Newton.

Lance Corporal Harold Arthur Edgar Newton enlisted at Vancouver, Canada on 9th November 1914. he served with the 29th battalion (British Columbia Regiment). He died of wounds on 6th April 1916 at Boulogne Hospital. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
