Alfred was born in Surrey in 1886, the son of late Frederick Robert and Martha Matilda Sarles of 2 Daft Terrace, Calverton Road, Arnold, Nottingham His father died leaving Alfred and his mother.She must have fell on hard times as Alfred is taken in by Doctor Barnardos homes. On 5th September 1895 we find him as a passenger on board the SS Sardinian a ship which leaves the port of Liverpool bound for Quebec in Canada, Alfred is 10 yrs of age and is with numerous other children emigrating to Canada for 'a new life'.

He volunteered for active service shortly after war broke out .He served with No 1 Canadian Depot Unit of supply of the Canadian Army Service Corps throughout the entire war but in 1919 we know that he was admitted into a base hospital just outside Calais in France and that he died there aged 30 years. The cause of death of Alfred was Influenza.
He is buried at Les Baraques Military cemetery, Sangatte, France
