Harry Mortimer Smedley was born on 5th June 1882 in Linby and was the son of John and Esther Smedley, of Linby, Nottinghamshire. He married his wife Dorothy Mary Wright in 1909, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, they lived at 68, Egerton Rd., Manitoba. In the 1911 census they are living at 20 Alexandria Street, East Kirkby Notts, he is shown as being 28 yrs and a colliery store keeper, above ground, his wife Dorothy Mary is 29 yrs, no occupation is listed for her.
He had previously served 13 yrs with the Royal Navy. He was a colliery store keeper, above ground in the 1911 census

43rd Bn Canadian Infantry
Private Harry Mortimer Smedley, enlisted on 29th September 1915 in Winnipeg, Canada. He served with the 43rd Battalion Canadian Infantry, he was killed in action on 27th December 1917. He is buried in Loos British Cemetery.

Smedley, Canadian Forces, killed in action (France) December 27th, 1917, late of Hucknall.
