John George Scothern was born in 1896 the son of William a coal miner and Annie Scothern (née Bowmar). William was born in 1865 at Sutton in Ashfield, Annie Bowmar in 1867 at Kirkby in Ashfield. Married in 1884, they had ten children. Listed on 1901/1911Census returns were Lizzie b.1885, Louisa b.1888, Frank b.1890, Charlotte b.1893, Ivy b.1899 John b.1896, Jane b.1898, Ermantrude b.1902, William b.1905 and Emily b.1909. In 1911 they lived at 15 Nuncar Road, Nuncargate, East Kirkby.
He was a colliery banksman in 1911.

John George Scothern enlisted at Mansfield, initially serving (49858) in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the Machine Gun Corps when he died at 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle. Kingsway Old Cemetery, Kirkby-in-Ashfield Grave Reference B.S.1088.
