George Henry Johnson was born in 1894 the son of Edwin a planer at an engineering works and Mary Elizabeth Johnson (née Roberts). His father was born in 1859 at Barkstone Le Willows, Lincolnshire, his mother in 1860 at Stamford, Lincolnshire. Married in 1891, they had five children - George Henry b.1894, Florence Hilda b.1895, Edith Annie b.1896, Lillian Constance b.1900 and Eva May b.1901. In 1911 they lived at 43 Jubilee Street, Newark. Florence Hilda was a domestic servant and Edith Annie a millinery apprentice.

George Henry Johnson initialled served with the 25th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (61979) transferring to Southern Command Labour Centre, Labours Corps. He died at Oxford Military Hospital. He was buried at Newark Cemetery, Grave Reference: P G U 255.
Sent to hospital in Newport Pagnall in Februray with synovitis of the knee-joint, from which he had partly recovered. On the closing of that hospital was sent to the military hospital at Oxford. Expected to be discharged on March 4th 1918, but taken ill with influenza, which developed into pneumonia. His father arrived on Sunday and was with him as much as possible until his death at 2.50 on Monday, March 10th.
