Fred States was born Fred Castledine in 1898 at Bingham and was the son of Miriam Castledine, of 26 Derby Street, Mansfield. His mother was born in 1879 at Bingham, she married Sidney Charles States born 1881 at Kent, in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have two further children Miriam Olive b1906 Mansfield and Ida Mary b1909 Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family were living at Lamb's Yard, Oxton and were shown as Sidney Charles States 28 yrs a butchers assistant, he is living his wife Miriam 32 yrs and their children Miriam Olive 5 yrs and Ida Mary 2 yrs. It has not been possibly to trace Fred on the 1911 census.

16th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Lance Corporal Fred States enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st March 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France panel 52.
