John William Watson was born in 1889 at Southwell and was the son of William an agricultural labourer and Sarah Ann Watson née Hearson . His father was born in 1852 at Southwell and his mother Sarah Ann Hearson was born in 1848 at Southwell, they were married and went on to have the following children, Mary Ann b1880, Herbert Ward b1882, Alice b1884, Edith b1887 and John William b1889. In the 1911 census John William is living at Easthorpe , Southwell , he is shown as being 22 yrs a threader for a lace manufacturer, he is living with his brother Herbert Ward 29 yrs a threader for a lace manufacture and his sister Edith 24 yrs a house keeper. John William married Mary Elizabeth Adams at Mansfield in 1915 and they lived at 21 Cedar Street, Mansfield. Following his death his widow Mary married John Whitley at Sheffield in 1917.
He was a threader in 1911 and was employed by Messrs Barringer Wallis and Manners

Lance Corporal John William Watson enlisted in June 1915 at Mansfield, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 5th September 1916 at the 35th Casualty Clearing Station and is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France. Plot 3. Row E. Grave 8.
This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
