Albert Oakland was born in 1885 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur a shop keeper and Ellen Oakland née Meller, they lived at 6 Carlton Terrace, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1850 in Nottingham , his mother Ellen Meller was born in 1852 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1872 in Nottingham and went on to have 8 children , sadly one of which was to died in infancy, their surviving children all born in Nottingham were : - Edgar b1873, Jane b1876, Mabel b1881, Albert b1885, Nellie b1887, Alice b1889 and Horace b1895. Albert married his wife Gertrude Holmes (b1888 Meadows) in 1908 in Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter May Oakland who was born in 1909 in West Bridgford. In the 1911 census Albert and his family are living at 183 Exchange Road, West Bridgford, he is shown as being 26 yrs a leather dresser, head of the family , he is living with his wife Gertrude, 23 yrs and their daughter May 2yrs. In the same census his parents are living at 6 Carlton Terrace, Nottingham , his father Arthur is 61 yrs a shop keeper and head of the family he is living with his wife Ellen 59 yrs and their two youngest children Alice 22 yrs a lace pattener and Horace 16 yrs a leather dresser.

5th Bn South Staffordshire Regiment
Private Albert Oakland enlisted in Nottingham and initially served with service number 79002 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regiment. He was later transferred to the 5th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 28th September 1918 and is buried in Bellicourt British Cemetery (grave ref. III.I.8).
