Norman Martin was the only child of James, a farmer and inn keeper, (died 1910) and Eliza Martin. In 1901 they lived at Firbeck and later at 1 Caledon Road Sherwood Nottingham.
He attended Worksop College between 1904 and 1908 and became a colliery apprentice.

Norman Martin attested at Sheffield on the 4th September 1914, joining the Coldstream Guards. He embarked for France on 22nd Dec, 3 ½ months later. On the 9/12/1915 he was transferred to 2nd Guards Brigade Machine Gun Coy. By 14/3/1916 he had been returned to UK and hospitalized to Norfolk War Hospital, where he showed signs of tubule of the lung and after a short time was discharged, no longer physically fit for war service on 28th June 1916 (Silver Badge no. 18565). He was buried in the churchyard at Firbeck with a private cross (none Commonwealth War Graves Commission) headstone.
