Hubert known as Bertie to his family and friends was born 1898 in Rauceby and was the son of Jesse, a farm bailiff, and Julia Whitehead, (nee Theaker) of Thoroton, Aslockton, Notts. They had eight children:- John William b1884, Martha Emily b1886, Mabel b1887, Jessie b1890, Julia b1893, George b1895, Hubert (Bertie) b1898, and Madeline b1903, all their children were born in Rauceby, Lincs. in the 1901 census the family are living at Rauceby, Lincs, Jesse is a horseman on a farm and is living with his wife Julia and their 4 children, Jessie, Julia, George and Herbert (Bertie). By the 1911 census the family have moved into Nottinghamshire and are living at Thoroton, near to Aslockton, Jesse by now 50 years of age is a farm bailiff born in Gringley, his wife Julia 48 years and born Ranskill are living with four of their children, Julia, George, Bertie and Madeline. Also living at the address is a servant, William Clay, a wagoner on the farm.

2/6th Bn The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)
Hubert enlisted at Bingham, he gave his place of birth as Rosby (sic), Lincs, and his place of residence as Aslockton. He served with the 2/6th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 14th April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
