Albert was born in 1895 the son of Thomas (1854-1912) a joiner and sawyer and Julian (born Newark 1856) Gilbert (née Hunter). They were married in 1874 at Radford and had the following children - John Thomas b.1875 Lenton, William b.1881 Lenton, Lillian b.1886 Lenton, Henry b.1888 Radford, Grace b.1891 Radford, Mable b 1893 Radford, Bertram b1895 Radford , Albert b1895 Radford , Wilfred b1898 Radford, Percy b.1901 Radford and Dora b.1903 Radford. In 1911, they lived at 84 Miall Street, Old Radford, Nottingham. Grace and Mabel were blouse makers, Bertram a litho printer, Albert a metal turner in a cycle works whilst Wilfred and Dora were at school. Both Percy and Albert had emigrated to Canada prior to 1916 as it would appear had their mother as she died on 25th June 1915 and is buried in Oak River, Manitoba, Canada.
He was a labourer upon enlistment.

Albert Gilbert enlisted in Canada on 24th January 1916 aged 20 citing his brother Percy as next of kin. He died of wounds at 33rd Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Ligny St Flochel British Cemetery, Grave Reference: I F 21.
