John Hollis was born in Radford in 1895 and was the son of George a frame work knitter and Mary Hollis, née Noon of 9 Bulwer Road, Radford, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1860 at Mansfield, his mother Mary Noon was born in 1863 at Nottingham, they were married in 1880 at Nottingham and went on to have 13 children, sadly 7 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Nottingham were Walter b1886, George b1891, John b1895, Harold b1898, Nelly b1905 and Florence b1907 In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Bulwer Road, Radford, Nottingham and were shown as George 51 yrs a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Mary 48 yrs and their children, George 20 yrs a maker of surgical hosiery, John 16 yrs a silk winder, Harold 13 yrs a scholar, Nellie 6 yrs and Florence 4 yrs of age.
He was a hosiery hand for Gibson and Son’s prior to enlisting

Lance Corporal John Hollis enlisted on 18th August 1910 at Nottingham giving his age falsely as 17 yrs and 4 months (he was born in 1895 and was therefore only 15 yrs old) his address was 9 Bulwer Road, Radford, Nottingham he was a hosiery hand his religion was that of a Wesleyan. His next of kin was his father George of the same address, He served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France on 28th February 1915 and was appointed Lance Corporal 5th June 1915. He was wounded whilst on a digging party near Salvation Wood, Belgium, and died of wounds, on 9th July 1915, at No. 14 Field Ambulance, Dickebusch, Belgium. He is buried at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Row F. Grave 24.
