He was the son of John and Mary Crane and the brother of John, Alex and Robert Crane. In 1911 they lived at 13 Teversal Avenue Nottingham.
He was a lace draughtsman.

George Crane entered theatre after 1 January 1916 and joined 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). On 5 July 1916 the battalion attacked in three columns to consolidate all ground up to the front line. Close quarter fighting took place for hours but eventually it was obvious that no gains were being made and the battalion was pulled back. George was one of 59 men killed and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
