Herbert Edward Saunders

Herbert was the son of Jane Saunders and the stepson of Henry Hancock (marriage registered 1901 J/F/M Nottingham). CWGC gives his first names as 'Herbert Edward' although other records given only 'Herbert'. In 1901 Herbert (6) and his brother, John (4, b. 1896) were living with their maternal grandparents, Herbert Saunders (49), a coal miner, and Sarah Saunders (54) at 4 Hogue Street, Old Radford. Also in the household were three of Herbert and Sarah's children; William (18) a coal miner-ganger, Albert (12) and Ethel (10). The same year Herbert and Albert's mother, Jane Hancock (25), was living with her husband, Henry (27), a colliery shunter, at 6 Abbey Buildings, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. Also in the household was James Liddell (75, b. Scotland) described as Henry's widowed grandfather. By 1911 Herbert and John were living with their mother and stepfather at 6 Abbey Buildings, Ilkeston Road, Radford. Both boys were cycle hands. Herbert's uncle, Albert Saunders, served with the 8th Bn North Staffordshire (Prince of Wales's) Regiment (28090 Private) and was killed in action on 8 June 1917 (Thiepval Memorial).

In 1911 he was a cycle hand.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
