Person Details
Barrow in Furness, Lancashire
Frank was the son of Henry and Mary Tomlinson. Although he was apparently born in Barrow in Furness (service records) his birth was registered in Nottingham in 1886 (Apr/May/Jun) and the census records for 1891/1901 give his birth place as Nottingham. He was christened in Nottingham on 13 September 1886. His father, Henry Tomlinson, was born in Lambley, Nottinghamshire, and worked as a grocer's porter/carter, while his mother, Mary, was born in Upton, Nottinghamshire. Frank's parents had at least five children; Lucy E., William Hy (Billy), Alice Mary, Frank Godber and Tom Gerald. In 1891 Harry and Mary were living at 92 Wilford Road, Meadows, Nottingham, with their children Lucy (10), William (9), Alice (6), Frank (4), Tom (2). They were still living in the Meadows in 1901, all the children were in work apart from the youngest, Tom, who was still at school. Frank married Lily Doncaster (spinster) in Sandiacre parish church, Derbyshire, on 21 October 1911. They had one child and there is a record of the birth of a Muriel Tomlinson, mother's maiden name 'Doncaster', registered in Nottingham in 1912 (Jul/Aug/Sep). At the time of Frank's death his family was living at 192 Ilkeston Road, Radford, Nottingham. Frank's brother, Tom, served in the ASC (Mechanical Transport), service number 113208, from June 1915 and first served in France in October 1915. It is not known if their older brother, William, also served. Frank's father predeceased him and his mother, Mary, may have died in 1924. There is a record of the death of a Muriel Tomlinson, born 8 July 1912, who died at the age of 83 in 1995, death registered North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear.
In 1911 he was a fitting apprentice.
