Charles William Henry Swift was born in 1890 at Shardlow and was the son of the late William a colliery stoker and his second wife Sarah Jane Swift née Poxon . His father William was born in 1857 at Crewe in Cheshire, he died in 1905 in Nottingham aged 46 yrs , he had been married to Sarah Ann Nicolls (1862-1889) and had a son Charles Nicholls Swift born 1883 with her. His father re married in 1890 in Nottingham, to Sarah Jane Poxon born 1872 at Shardlow, they had the following children, Charles William Henry b1890 Shardlow, their remaining children were all born in Radford and were Harry b1893, Harriett b1895, Mary b1899, Jack b1902 and Fred b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Charter Street, Radford and are shown as Sarah 39 yrs a widow, she is living with her children William 20 yrs a tobacco packer, Harry a brewers labeller, Harriett a cotton clearer, Mary 12 yrs a scholar, Jack 9 yrs and Fred 5 yrs of age. Charles married his wife Winifred Bradbury (born 1893) in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 25 Faraday Road, Lenton, they had a son William Henry born in 1915, Following Charles death his widow Winifred was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 19th March 1917.
In the 1911 census he was a tobacco packer.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Charles William Henry Swift enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 22nd August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France.
His brother Harry enlisted into the Army in Nottingham and served with 'A' Coy 2nd battalion, Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
