Tom Hardy was born in 1898 the son of John Taylor Hardy a stoker fitter and Jane Hardy (née Byron). John Taylor Hardy was born in 1861 at Newark, Jane Byron in 1868 also at Newark. Married in Newark in 1890, they had the following children, John Taylor b.1892, Mary Elizabeth b.1895, Tom b.1898 and Harold b.1902. All were born in Newark. In 1911, they lived at 2, Charles Street, Newark. John was a clerk, Mary Elizabeth an apprentice dress maker whilst Tom and Harold were at school. Tom's father John Taylor died on 13th December 1919 at Newark.

Private Tom Hardy enlisted at Newark. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 . He was killed in action between 21st March and 31st March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memoria,l Bay 7
Article published 25th September 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr & Mrs Hardy, 2 Charles Street, Newark. Attended Barnby Road Council School and was afterwards employed by Messrs. Ransome & Co., Stanley Works. Also belonged to Charles Street Wesleyan Sunday School. Posted missing between March 21st and 31st, between Queant and Norcine.
