George William Wood was born in 1884 at Lincoln and was the son of John Wood a farmer and his first wife the late Harriett Wood née Darcey. His father John was born in 1861 at Sturton, Lincolnshire and his mother Harriett Darcey was born in 1861 at Washingborough, Lincolnshire, she died in 1898 aged 37 yrs they were married in 1883 at Lincoln, Harriet brought a child to the marriage, Harriett b1882 at Lincoln. Following his mothers death in 1898, his father went to marry again in 1904 in Newark to Eliza Weetman b1865 at Digby, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at Potter Hill Farm, Newark Road, Swinderby and are shown as John 50 yrs a farmer, his is living with his wife Eliza 46 yrs and their son George William 27 yrs a waggoner on a farm, also living at the address are two male servants. His father John died in 1914 aged 54 in Newark. At the time of George William's death his step mother was living at Brant Broughton, Newark, Notts. His probate was proven on 15th January 1918 at Lincoln and shows him as George William Wood of Potter Hill, Swinderby, Lincolnshire, a Company Sergeant Major in the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, died on 11th November 1917 at 10th Casualty Clearing Station, France, his effects of £557 went to Eliza Wood a widow,
He was a waggoner on a farm.

Company Sergeant Major Wood enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died of wound on 11th November 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery
