Joseph Lester was born in 1892 the son of Samuel Henry Lester a bricklayer’s labourer and Ann Elizabeth Lester (née Bish). Joseph’s parents were born at Nottingham, Samuel Henry in 1859, Ann Elizabeth in 1868. Married in 1893, they had nine children. Joseph’s six siblings to survive infancy were Alice b.1895, William b.1902, Elizabeth b.1902, Millicent b.1904, Florence b.1908 and Lawrence b.1910. In 1911, they lived at 20, Snow Hill, Sneinton, Nottingham. William was a brush maker and Alice made lace. At the time of Joseph’s death, his family was living at 17, Woodland Street, Newark Street, Nottingham.
Joseph was a coal miner upon enlistment.

Joseph Lester enlisted on 1st October 1914 at Doncaster aged 22 years and 9 months. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 7th September 1915 and landed in France three days later. Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 14A & 14B
