He was the son of William and Kate Gilliatt and the brother of John William and Harold Frederick Gilliatt. In 1911 the family was living at 24 Stratford Road, West Bridgford. His brother, Private Harold Gilliatt, 10th Bn Sherwood Foresters, was killed in action 14 February 1916.
He was an apprentice in 1911.
