George William was born in 1884 at Hucknall and was the son of Arthur Allen, a coal miner and the late Harriet Allen néé Wade of 6, Linby Terrace, George St., Hucknall, Nottingham His father Arthur was born in 1859 at Radcliffe on Trent and married his wife Harriet Wade in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district they had the following children William b1882, Joseph b1883 and George William b1884. In the 1911 census his father Arthur is living at 6 Linby Terrace, George Street, Hucknall he is shown as being 52 yrs and a widow and a cola miner, he is living with his house keeper Emma Earl 45 yrs also a widow and housekeeper. He married his wife Alice Coltman in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 14, Morris Terrace, Morris St., Daybrook, Nottingham.

He enlisted on 23rd March 1915 at Hucknall . At his time of enlistment he states that he is 29 years and 160 days old and his occupation is that of a carter and that he lives at 13 Drayton Yard, Front Street, Arnold he enlisted into the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and after training near Winchester he was sent out with the 9th Battalion to France. On the 24th September the 9th Battalion the Kings Royal Rifle Corps moved out of a rest area near Poperinghe, Belgium and advanced to positions from which they would take part in an attack on the German Positions at Bellewarde Farm, which attack was a part of the general attack of the Allied Armies. He was killed in action during this attack. he has no known grave, His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
