George Allen was born in 1883 at Basford the son of John a van man and Sarah Ann Allen (née Shaw). John was born in 1844 at Basford and died prior to 1901. Sarah Ann Shaw was born in 1855 at Bedworth, Warwickshire. Married in 1877 in the Basford Registration District, they had nine children - William b.1879, John b.1880, George b.1883, Annie b.1884, Wilfred b.1887, Lottie b.1889, Clara Jane b.1891, Samuel b.1894 and David b.1897. In 1911 the family was living at 58 Mosley Street, New Basford, Nottingham. George was a winder, Annie a mender, Wilfred a labourer, Lottie a house hand, Clara a house hand, Samuel a moulder whilst David was still at school. Sarah Allen later lived at 42 Whitbread Street, Basford, Nottinhgham (CWGC).
George Allen was a lace mender upon enlistment.

1st Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps
George Allen enlisted on 20th January 1904 at Nottingham giving his age as 19 years and 6 months. He was posted to the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was embodied on 5th August 1914 and landed in France on 22nd August 1914. George Allen was posted missing, later confirmed dead, on 3rd November 1914 and is buried in Oostaverne Wood Cemetery, Belgium Grave Reference: I.G.6
