Samuel Hufton

Samuel was born in Nottingham about 1872 and was probably the son of Josiah Hufton, a framework knitter, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1891 Josiah and Elizabeth were living at 21 Blake Street, Nottingham, in the parish of St Matthias; Samuel (20), a framework knitter, was the eldest of seven children - four boys, three girls including one named Sarah - who were living at home. Two more girls were born before the 1911 Census. Samuel's wife Harriett Wright, was also probably born in Nottingham in about 1872; she was the daughter of William and Sarah Wright Samuel and Harriett were married on 17 March 1894 at St Matthias, Sneinton (J/F/M Nottingham). They had six children who were all born in Nottingham: Florence Gertrude b. 7 October 1895 (O/N/D Nottingham) bap. Nottingham St Mary 1 April 1896 , William Arthur b. 1902 (J/A/S Nottingham), Eveline b. 8 July 1904 (J/A/S Nottingham), Doris b. 1906 (A/M/J Nottingham), Sidney b. 16 October 1909 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Ida b. 1911 (A/M/J Nottingham). At the time their first child Florence was baptised in 1896 Samuel and Harriett were living at 26 Beauchamp Street. However, by 1901 they were living on Blake Street with their only child, Florence (5). In 1911 they were living at 2 Wycliffe Grove. Nottingham, with their five children: Florence (15) a blouse machinist, William (8), Eveline (6), Doris (4) and Sidney (1). Their youngest child, Ida, was born shortly after the census was compiled. The family home was later at 43 Conway Street, Nottingham, and this was still Harriett's address when she died on 31 October 1925. Of Samuel and Harriett's children: Florence Gertrude married Aubrey F Selby in 1916 (J/A/S Nottingham) In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled they were living at 6 Ferriby Terrace, Nottingham; Aubrey (b. 12 November 1890) was a railway goods guard and Florence's occupation was given as unpaid domestic duties. Also in the househod were their daughters Ivy S. (b. 20 January 1920) a shirt collar machinist, and Dorothy ( b. 20 July 1922) a shirt seam machinist. Florence died in 1963 (A/M/J Nottingham). WIlliam Arthur probably married Mary Gale in 1924 (J/A/S Nottingham) and died in 1963 (A/M/J Nottingham). Eveline married Alfred E Parker in 1933 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 43 Conway Street, Nottingham. Alfred (b. 22 May 1902) was a grocery van driver and Evelyn's occupation was given as unpaid domestic duties. Eveline died in 1985 (A/M/J Nottingham). Doris died on 15 November 1921 (O/N/D Nottingham) aged 15. Sidney probably married Dorothy Rockley in 1934 (A/M/J Nottingham) and died in 1989 (O/N/D Nottingham). Ida may have married Arthur L Bassford in 1934 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 28 Oakfield Drive, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire; Arthur (b. 19 May 1907) was a charge hand storekeeper and Ida (b. 8 April 1911) was a cigarette packer. Ida probably died in 1986(J/A/S Weston-super-Mare, Somerset).

He was probably working as a framework knitter in 1891. However, he was a lamp lighter in 1911 and had worked for the Corporation lighting department for 25 years before enlisting.

Nottingham; he enlisted in Nottingham

Hufton enlisted in Nottingham and was drafted to Salonica, where he served with the Spares Department of the Army Service Corps. He died from dysentry, which was endemic in Salonica, and was buried at Lembet Road Military Cemetery (1439). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
