John William Green

He was the son of James Edward and Florence Green (nee Nightingale). His father was born in Sydenham in about 1865, the son of John and Dinah Green, but by 1871 the family was living at 16 Church Street, Lenton, Nottingham. His mother was born in Coventry in 1863 and christened at Coventry St Michael on 6 September 1863. James and Florence were married in 1887 (J/A/S Nottingham) and had five children of whom four survived: John William (25 October 1888), Florence (b 1890), Beatrice May (b. 1897) and Herbert (b. 1902). In 1891 James (26) a joiner/builder and Florence (27) together with their two children, John (2) and Florence (10 months), were living at 11 Church Street, Lenton. The family continued to live at 11 Church Street for at least the next twenty years (1901 and 1911 Census). By 1901 James was a joiner and coachmaker (employer) and it is likely that John worked for his father as in 1911 he was following the same occupation. John married Elsie Brittain in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham). Elsie was born in 1888 (O/N/D Nottingham), the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Brittain. In 1911 Elsie and her family were living at 47 Stratford Road, West Bridgford; she was employed as a shorthand-typist. John and Elsie were living at 47 Stratford Road when he died in 1917. John's parents were living at 'Grenville', Derby Road, Lenton, at the time of their son's death and when his father died in 1952 at the age of 88 he was living at 355 Derby Road, presumably the same address. John's mother, Florence, probably died in 1936 at the age of 72.

In 1911 he was a coach maker. He gave his occupation as carpenter/joiner when he joined the Royal Navy in 1916.

John joined the Royal Navy on 8 November 1916, 'hostilities only'. He served in the following ships and shore establishments: President II (Palace), 8 November 1916-13 May 1917; President II (-), 16 May 1917-30 June 1917; HMS Daedalus (-), 1 July 1917-6 August 1917. His Naval record was annotated, ‘NP6457/17. DD 6th August 1917 from appendicitis and intestinal obstruction.’ He died in the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery on 9 August 1917 after a service at Woodborough Road Baptist Church (grave ref. 4545).
