Harry Raymond Gray was born in 1894 in West Bridgford and was the son of Thomas Crow an assistant Overseer and Poor Rate Collector for the Basford Board of Guardians and Mary Hannah Gray née Devening of 38 Millicent Road, West Bridgford. His father Thomas Crow was born in 1853 in Donington, Lincolnshire , his mother Mary Hannah Devening was born in 1856 in Wooburn Green, Buckinghamshire, they were married in 1881 in Nottingham and went on to have 8 children , sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in West Bridgford and were :- Marion Lucas b1884, Edith Annne b1885, Wilfrid John b1887, Leila Sara b1889, Harry Raymond b1894 and Elsie Devening b1895. In the 1911 census the family living at 38 Millicent Road, West Bridgford and are shown as Thomas Crow 58 yrs assistant Overseer and Poor Rate Collector for the Basford Board of Guardians he is living with his wife Mary Hannah 55 yrs and their children Marion Lucas 27 yrs a general nurse, Edith Annie 26 yrs no occupation listed, Harry Raymond 17 yrs a student of building construction, and Elsie Devening 15 yrs a chemists clerk.

Royal Engineers
Sapper Harry Raymond Gray, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 7th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He landed in France on 6th July 1915 and he was killed in action on 12th November 1915. He is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres.
Death notice published 22nd November 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- GRAY. – Killed at the war, Sapper Harry R.
