John McLellan was the younger son of Alfred Hine and his first wife Isabella nee McLellan. Alfred was born in Cumberland in 1841, and Isabella in Scotland. They were married on 26 July 1865 (Cross-Canonby Cumberland) and had at least two sons, Alfred b. 1868 (A/M/J Cockermouth Cumberland) and John McLennan b. 14 April 1872 (A/M/J Cockermouth). Both boys were born in Maryport, Cumberland. John's mother, Isabella, died in 1873 (J/F/M Cockermouth) aged 30 and his father married secondly Mary Eaglesfield in 1875 (A/M/J Cockermouth). Alfred and Mary had at least three children: Mary McLennan b. 1876, Ethel Ann McLennan and Wilfred McLennan. In 1901 Alfred (59), who was in the shipping industry (employer), and Mary (54) were living at Park Hill, Maryport, Cumberland, with Alfred's son John (28) a marine engineer, and their children Mary (24), Ethel (23) and Wilfred (20). Alfred employed four domestic servants. John McLennan married Lydia Emma Booth (b. Hackney, London, 25 December 1876) on 5 May 1901 at Cross-Canonby, Cumberland, and they had four children: Alfred b. 18 January 1903 (J/F/M Cockermouth), Lydia Margaret b. 29 January 1904, Joan McLennan b. 5 October 1906 (O/N/D Cockermouth) and Nancy Mary McLennan b. 13 September 1908 (O/N/D Luton Bedfordshire). Their first three children were born in Cumberland and their fourth child in Luton. In 1911 John (38) a marine engineer for an insurance company, and Lydia (34) were living at 44 Patrick Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, with their four children, Alfred (8), Lydia (6), Joan (4) and Nancy (2). Also in the household was Gladys Farnden (26), whose occupation was that of companion, and Eliza Jane Hogg (18) a general domestic servant. The family was still living at 44 Patrick Road when John died in May 1916. However, in 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register, his widow Lydia was living at 81 Chaworth Road, West Bridgford. Also in the household was her married daughter Nancy Warlow. Both women's occupation was described as 'unpaid domestic duties'. Lydia was still living at 81 Chaworth Road at the time of her death on 28 March 1955. Of John and Lydia's children: Alfred became a mechanical engineer, being admitted to membership of the IME on 22 September 1922. In 1939 he was a technical officer living in No. 1 Flat, ACO, Ditton Park, Slough, with his wife Mildred (b. 27 November 1903). He was one of the executors of his mother's Will in 1955 and his occupation was given as 'civil servant' on the probate record. He may have made a second marriage as there is a record of the marriage of an Alfred Hine to Audrey EA Culley in 1960 (O/N/D North Walsham Norfolk) and his death in 1966 (Sep Norwich Norfolk) aged 63. Lydia Margaret married Eric William Saywell (b. 15 March 1905) in 1931 (J/A/S Basford). In 1939 Margaret and Eric, a garage manager, were living in Southall, Middlesex. Lydia died in 1964 (Jun St Germans Cornwall) and her husband Eric died in 1972 (Dec Surrey) aged 67. Joan McLellan married James D Jackson in 1929 (A/M/J Basford). She died in on 5 October 1983 (Dec Depwade Norfolk, aged 77; she was then living at The Old Reading Room, Palgrave, Suffolk. Nancy Mary McLellan married Charles Edward Picton Warlow in 1931 (A/M/J Basford) and they probably had at least two sons: John P [Picton?] b. 1936 (Chesterfield, mother's maiden name Hine) and Charles Picton. There is a record of Nancy living at 33 Button End, Cambridgeshire, in 1932-33 although at the time of the compilation of the 1939 Register she was at her mother's home in West Bridgford, Nottingham. Nancy died on 10 January 1987 (Jan Colchester Essex) aged 78; she was then living at 31 Havencroft Court, North Street, Walton-on-Naze.
In 1901 he was a marine engineer, in 1911 he was a marine engineer for an insurance company and a report of his death in the local paper described him as an 'inspector in the engineering department of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation in Nottingham'. He was connected with the Boys' Brigade.
