Charles Burton was born in 1884 the son of Edgar a coal miner and Jane Burton née Lamb of New Westwood, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. Edgar was born in 1856 at Ambergate, Derbyshire, Jane Lamb in 1859 at Whaley, Derbyshire. Married in 1881 near Belper, they had six children, five surviving infancy - Amelia b.1883, Charles b.1884, Henry b.1885, Thomas b.1890 and Esther b.1901. In 1911, the family was living at Westwood. Charles and Henry were coal miners whilst Thomas made sanitary pipes.
In 1911, Charles Burton was a miner.

Charles Burton enlisted 5/9/1914 and first entred theatre (France) 19/5/1915. He was discharged in 1918 (13th September on some records, 14th December on others). He was awarded a Silver War Badge (491964). He was suffering from myalgia aggravated by military service (pension record).
Charles's brother Thomas Burton was killed in action 3/9/1916.
