Tom Hill was born in 1882 he was the son of the late George Henry a frame work knitter and Sarah Ann Hill née Fish of 3 West Court, Mansfield Road, Nottingham George Henry was born in 1860 at Liverpool, he died in 1894 aged 34 yrs Sarah Ann Fish was also born in 1860 at Arnold, they were married in 1879 at they had 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy In the 1911 census the family were living at 3 West Court, Mansfield Road, Nottingham Sarah Ann Hill 51 yrs a widow and a lace dresser she is living with her son Thomas 29 yrs a carter and her daughter May 17 yrs a lace dresser. The family later lived at 21 Milk Street, Glasshouse Street Nottingham. Tom married Sarah Clarson (born 7th April 1887) in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 1 Old Strret Place, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. His widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week commencing 25th February 1918.
In 1911 Tom is a carter.

Hill volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion was involved in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres. They held positions near the village of Westhoek which were heavily shelled prior to a German attack. Casualties were high and included Pte. Hill who was seriously wounded , and who died on 16/08/1917. He was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
