John Wilfred Hankin was born in 1898 and was the son of John Henry a coal miner and Kate Hankin née Dawes of Bagthorpe. His father John Henry was born in 1872 at Selston and his mother Kate Dawes was born in 1868 at Selston, they were married in 1892, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were John William b1898, James A b1902, Kate b1904, Fred A b1905 and Edwin b1909 all were born at Selston. In the 1911 census the family lived at Bagthorpe Green near Jacksdale Nottinghamshire and were shown as John Henry 39 yrs a coal miner contractor, he is living with is wife Kate 42 yrs and their children, John William 13 yrs a scholar, James 9 yrs a scholar, Kate 7 yrs a scholar, Fred 6 yrs and Edwin 2 yrs

Private John Wilfred Hankin enlisted on 14th May 1915 at Ilkeston, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 6 months, his address as Bagthorpe and stated he was a collier. His next of kin was his father John Henry Hankin of the same address. He embarked from Southampton on 6th March 1916. He was killed in action on 29th May 1916 and is buried at Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy
