Alan Bert Littlewood was born in 1895 in Birmingham and was the son of John Elliot an insurance secretary and Augusta Littlewood née Gwilliam of Beech House, 65 Loughborough Road, West Bridgford. His father John Elliott was born in 1860 at Walton on Thames Surrey and his mother Augusta Gwilliam was born in 1870 in Birmingham, they were married in 1890 in Aston, Birmingham and went on to have the 3 children , John Elliott b1892 Birmingham, Alan Bert b1892 Birmingham and Isabel Margaret b1900 West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at Beech House, 65 Loughborough Road, West Bridgford. and are shown as John Elliott 51 yrs an insurance secretary, he is living with his wife Augusta 41 yrs and their children , John Elliott 19 yrs an insurance clerk, Alan Bert 15 yrs an insurance clerk and Isabel Margaret 11 yrs a scholar.

8th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps
Lance Corporal Alan Bert Littlewood, enlisted at Nottingham on 10th September 1914, he was 19 yrs and 130 days old, he was a clerk. He served with the 8th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, and embarked for France on 11th August 1915 as the 3rd reinforcement for the 8th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was appointed to Lance Corporal in the field on 15th November 1915. He was killed in action on 24th August 1916 and having no known grave , his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
In memoriam published 24th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LITTLEWOOD. – In honoured, undying memory of dear Alan (Billy), lance-corporal, K.R.R., who fell in the front line at Delville Wood on August 24th, 1916, the dearly-loved and loving younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
