Willis (William) Smith was born in 1894 he was the son of John Laverick Smith a quarryman and stonemason of 19, King's Rd., Cudworth, Barnsley, and the late Ann Smith (née Cawthorne) John Laverick was born in 1868 at Swainby, Stokesly, Yorkshire Ann Cawthorne was born in 1869 at Wath Upon Dearne, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Rotherham registration district, they had 8 children. In 1911 the family were living at Midland Road, Royston, Barnsley John 42 yrs a quarryman and stone mason, he is living with his wife Ann 41 yrs and their 8 children including Willis 16 yrs a pit pony driver.
He was a pit pony driver.

2/4th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Corporal Willis Smith enlisted at Barnsley he served with the 2/4th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
