Former miner was the 45 year-old son of Charles and Sarah Thrall Wife: Alice, nee Hallam, married 1903. Children: Thomas, born 1904, Mabel, born 1906, Elizabeth, born 1908, Annie, born 1910 and Agnes born 1914. Lived at 4 Ladybrook Lane, Mansfield. His brother, Charles also served and he survived.

Had served in India and South Africa previously and had re-joined the army in January 1915. He had not been deployed abroad since re-enlisting.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 17/06/1915: Died of pneumonia whilst on leave, aged 45. "a fine specimen of manhood, tall and well built, capable of rending valiant service on behalf of his country".
