He was the son of John and Kate E L Redfern and the brother of Lilian Dorothy Redfern of 57 Trent Boulevard, West Bridgford, Nottingham. His father, John, died on 10 June 1937 aged 70 years.
He was a grocer's assistant in 1911.

Gunner
Royal Horse Artillery
Gunner Harry Redfern joined the Royal Horse Artillery (T.F.) on 16th April 1915 and later transferred to 3/1st and then 2/1st West Riding Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He served only in the UK and died of peritonitis in Nottingham General Hospital on 23rd August 1916. He was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery (St. Paul's. 9467).
Inscription on family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: ‘To the dear memory of John, the beloved husband of Kate Redfern, who died June 10th 1937, aged 70 years. Not my will but thine, O Lord. Also their son Harry, Gunner, RHA, who died Aug. 23rd 1916, aged 23 years. Where duty and glory lead.’ In memoriam notice published 24th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “REDFERN. – On August 23rd, 1916, at the General Hospital, Nottingham, Gunner Harry Worton Redfern, Notts. R.H.A., aged 23 years, beloved only son of John and Kate E. L. Redfern, 57, Trent-boulevard, Nottingham.” In memoriam notice published 23rd August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “REDFERN. – To the devoted memory of Guner Harry Worton Redfern, R.H.A., dearly-loved only son of John and Kate E. L. Redfern, 57, Trent-boulevard, Nottingham, died August 23rd, 1916. “REDFERN. – In loving memory of our dear friend, Harry Worton Redfern, gunner, R.H.A., who passed away August 23rd, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Mr. and Mrs. A.
