Old Basford
Joseph Grainger (senior) was born in 1870 at Old Basford, he married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Stainforth (born 11th June 1871) in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, of 201 Victoria Street Mansfield. They had 5 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Joseph (junior) b1893 Old Basford, Sarah Alice b1895 Old Basford and William Robert b1894 Old Basford. In 1911 the family are living at 201 New Victoria Road, Mansfield. His widow Lizzie was awarded a pension of 15 shillings on 26th October1917 which was raised to 26 shillings and 10 pence on 10th May 1918.

Sapper
254th Tunnelling Coy Royal Engineers
Sapper Joseph Grainger enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 30510 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 21st June 1917 whilst serving with the 254th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He is buried at Medingham Military Cemetery, Belgium
Their son, also called Joseph, was killed 9/9/1917 whilst serving with the Canadian Forces.
