Harold Betts was born in 1887 he was the son of George a coal miner hewer and the late Ellen Betts née Morley of 7 Vale Court, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. George was born in 1851 at Clarborough, Nottinghamshire, Ellen Morley was born in 1848 at Mansfield she died in 1896 aged 48 yrs, they were married on 5th March 1871 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they had 9 children. Harold married May Wells (born 14th May 1889 ) on 20h August 1906 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they had 3 children, Ellen May, born 10th March 1907. Harold born 9th August 1911 and Reginald born 23rd July 1915 they lived at 72 Cope Street, Mansfield. Commencing 15th January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Private Harold Betts enlisted October 1914 at Mansfield. He was killed in action, 28th June 1916, whilst serving in the line near Festubert, France. He is buried at Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row H. Grave 10.
