George Blythe was born in 1896 at Kirkby he was the son of Joseph a carting contractor and Sarah Blythe née Copeland of The Limes, Mansfield Woodhouse. Joseph was born in 1864 at Kirkby, Sarah Copeland was born in 1866 in Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 9 children. In 1911 the family were living at The Limes, Mansfield Woodhouse, Joseph 47 yrs is a carting contractor, he is living with his wife Sarah 45 yrs and 8 of their children including George 15 yrs a coal miPrivate George Blythe enlisted ner.
Worked at Sherwood Colliery.

Private George Blythe enlisted on the 17th August 1914 at Mansfield, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he embarked for Gallipoli on 1st July 1915 and was killed in action on 9th August 1915 his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli
Letter printed in Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser on 09/09/1915 from friend Pte J Redfern of 17 Old Mill Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. In it he describes George's death. George had been shot through the heart and did not suffer any pain. George was described as a jolly fellow and held in good opinion. The report also states his older brother L/Cpl John Blythe was in hospital in France.
