Arthur Edwin Cooke was born in 1897 he was the son of Thomas Edwin a coal miner and Sarah Ann Cooke née Johnson of 55 Portland Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Thomas Edwin was born in 1864 at Mansfield Woodhouse, Sarah Ann Johnson was born in 1868 at Bolsover they were married on 20th August 1895 at St Johns Church, Mansfield, they went on to have 5 children, sadly one died in infancy. In 1911 the family are living at 40 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, Thomas Edwin is 46 yrs and is a coal miner he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 43 yrs and their 4 children, including Arthur Edwin 14 yrs a coal miner.

Private Arthur Edwin Cooke attested on 12th December 1915 at Mansfield, aged 18 yrs and 361 days he was a coal screener, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 15th May 1916 and posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He embarked from Devonport on 4th September 1916 and disembarked on 16th October 1916 at Amara. He was admitted to Hospital and died on 14th July 1919 of malaria his name is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial, Iran.
Medical Report of his Death: Admitted to Tak-I-Garra hospital on 07/07/1919 with hyperpyrexia (extremely elevated temperature), sever headache and dizziness. Temp 103.8f. Has previously been treated for heatstroke in 1917 and 1918. Temperature slowly fell over next few days and by 13/07/1919 it was down to 96f. Arthur died at 2:40 am on the morning of 14/07/1919 of malaria.
