John George Gilman was born in 1892 he was the son of George Morley Gilman a coal miner hewer and Louie Gilman née Revill of Mansfield. George Morley was born in 1871 at Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire , he died on 27th January 1902 in a coal mining accident , Louie Revill was born in 1875 at Mansfield, they were married in 1891 at Mansfield they had 2 further children, May b1897 and Violet b1901. In 1911 John George has left the family home, he is living at Commercial Street, Mansfield he is shown as 19 yrs single and a ropeman in a coal mine he is living with Joseph Vaughan 54 yrs a coal miner hewer. John George married Cissie, Storer, (born 9th November 1893 at Staveley near Chesterfield) they were married on 18th May 1912 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse They had 2 children, Doris Violet born 18th September 1912 and Florence May born 1st August 1915 they lived at 77 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Commencing 8th July 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Private John George Gilman enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he served initially with The Sherwood Foresters Regiment (service number 19503.) He landed on 5th November 1915 in the Balkans. He was killed in action on 12th October 1917 whilst serving with the South Staffordshire Regiment on the Western Front. Having no know grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium.
