Thomas Alfred Hawley was born in 1894 he was the son of Reuben a coal miner hewer and Sarah Jane Hawley née Grain of 14 Vallance Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Reuben was born in 1857 at Radford, Sarah Jane Grain was born in 1863 at Loughborough, they were married on 24th March 1883 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford. they had 6 children. In 1911 the family were living at 14 Vallance Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Reuben is 54 yrs and a coal miner he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 48 yrs and six of their children including Thomas Alfred 17 yrs a coal miner pony driver

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Thomas Alfred Hawley enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was taken a prisoner of war and died in captivity on 21st October 1918 he is buried at Berlin South Western Cemetery.
Prisoner of War. The Berlin South Western Cemetery was specially created for those P.O.Ws who died in Germany. The bodies were gathered up from the camp cemeteries and reinterred in 1924/25. He left £109 3s 1d to his elderly father.
