Howard Hayward was born in 1893 he was baptised on 27th September 1893 at St Michael's Church, Pelsall he was the son of Charles a coal miner and Selina Hayward née Starkey of 87 High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Charles Hayward was born in1864 at Lawley Bank, Shropshire, Selina Starkey was born in 1864 at Pelsall, they were married on 2nd October 1882 at St Michaels Church, Rushall, Staffordshire, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 8 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 87 High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Charles is 47 yrs and a coal miner, he is living with his wife Selina 47 yrs and 4 of their children including Howard 17 yrs a miners driver

Private Howard Hayward enlisted at Mansfield, he went to France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack. Commemorated : Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Panel 7.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 10/06/1915: Photograph, shown as Haywood. Reported missing in October 1914 but only recently confirm dead. His name is also commemorated on the Pelsall Memorial.
