William Ernest Housley was born in 1879 he was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Deacon, of 10, Warner St., Hasland Rd., Chesterfield. (CWGC) In 1911 he is a visitor - 32 yrs and a professional shorthand writer he is visiting William Dennison 49 yrs a domestic head gardener and his family at The Gardens, East Hampstead, Berkshire.

Sapper William Ernest Housley enlisted on 15th November 1915 at Whitehall London, aged 38 years. He was posted to the Royal Engineers. He was however discharged on 21s May 1916 as 'not being likely to become an efficient soldier, diabetes' but was kept in the Special Reserve because of his stenography and shorthand skills. He was in hospital at Clipstone Camp from 3rd April 1916 until 18th May 1916. He did not serve abroad. He was awarded a Silver War Badge. William is buried in Mansfield Woodhouse (St Edmund) Churchyard Extension (south-east corner).
He was discharged to Hope House, Mansfield Woodhouse, the home of Robert Ryley. In his will William left £1472 4s & 2d, Probate awarded to Robert Ryley and William Reason.
