John Leatherland (junior) was born in 1893 at Langley Mill he was the son of John Leatherland (senior) and Lydia Leatherland née Shaw of 50 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. John Leatherland (senior) was born in 1869 at Heanor Lydia Shaw was born in 1871 at Eastwood, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 191 the family were living at 138 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, John is 42 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lydia 40 yrs and four of their children, including John 18 yrs a coal miner pony driver.
Worked at Warsop Main Colliery.

814th Trench Mortar Battery Royal Field Artillery
Gunner John Leatherland enlisted in January 1915 at Mansfield, he served with the 814th Trench Mortar battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 26th July 1916 he is buried at Avenes - Le - Comte Communal Cemetery extension, France.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 07/09/1916: Photograph. Letter included in the report... "in great deal of shock, with broken arm and leg."
